very pathetic interop between the big4.

Cingular is blazing a trail here as a GSM carrier, and people seems to be
aware of the 'text messaging thing' such that cingular has some pull in new
subs.
ATT is also pushing texting in some of its campaigns (TDMA). allegedly they
interop.

however sprint and verizon (cdma) are slow to implement any kind of text
messaging. on sprint they have a lame 'web alert' system where you can get
notification of a msg but have to go through the wap browser to retrieve it.
sprint also has basic text messaging where you can send (only) an email to a
sprint sub, but there is as yet no way for them to respond. this may be a
handset limitation however (not network). either way, cdma terminal makers
have been slow to emulate SMS (= ala kddi's old 'cMail').

verizon has launched brew here now, so presumably a pop3 client will be an
early hit...

// Does anyone know whether SMS has taken off in the US? I
