I think video call may have a not so dark future in the US because 
voice call MoU there is 2-3 times than in Japan. 

the fight between voice and data services is all about separating 
talking and listening between human beings.  a development similar 
to the invention of money.  (broadcasting is in the middle.) 

(2) 
DoCoMo runs TV commercials to advertise the FOMA video call feature. 
I think it's more a campaign against au/KDDI who now cannot provide 
interactive video service via its cdma2000 network.  the time delay 
is about 10 sec or more. 

a lot of features are there for attracting users who seldom use them. 
global roaming is one, video call may be another.
