I gather that Vodafone UK has been selling official unlock codes relatively cheaply (but delivering them very slowly). Has anyone ever asked Vodafone Japan?

I also believe that the locked Vodafone Japan model of the 6630 has significantly different firmware from the other global models. For example MP3 ringtones are crippled, and installing unsigned software is blocked. There are well publicised work-around though. If would be interesting to know if the unlocked 6630 available from Vodafone Japan (for about 60,000yen) is crippled too.

Most Nokia phones can be unlocked using an unlock code calculator, or
getting the unlock code from your carrier (after signing a 1-2
contract, something we don't have here in Japan). Getting the code
from your carrier is the proper way, and the code calculator the
hackers way ;-)
*However*, at this point none of the unlocking calculators are able to
unlock the Nokia phones, and, as mentioned, since there are not
long-term contracts, I doubt very much that VFKK are giving the unlock
codes away.
BTW, the 702NK and 6630 are basically the same phone, except with
certain VF specific icons and settings, which on the 702NK can be
switched off, basically returning the phone to it's 6630 state.
Best,
