> current cellphone system is GPS (circuit switched)
> Now building GPRS network (2.5G digital packet switched)
> 3G will be UMTS
GPS is the Global Positioning System, the most widely available
European (really global, not only European) system is GSM.
GPRS is not a new network but an enhancement to the existing GSM
networks to enable packet switched services. Carriers are doing
initial installations right now and commercial availability is
scheduled for very late this year, at the earliest.
