Finance Home[18] UK mobile Internet use tops expectations-Phone.com LONDON,
June 29 (Reuters) - Britons with mobile Internet phones are calling up an
average of 40 pages of news and other information a day, according to one of
the first pieces of statistics since the mass market launch of the service
inApril.
Malcolm Bird, the European chief of U.S. software company Phone.com , said
the figure was derived from the traffic going over the Internet
infrastructure it supplies mobile operators.
Phone.com, which also puts browser software in handsets, said the number of
screens Britons were downloading exceeded its expectations. People with
Internet phones were also making more voice calls, he said, though the
reasonwhy was unclear.
BT Cellnet launched Internet handsets to the mass market in April and
plannedto sell 500,000 by the end of June.
The take-off of the mobile Internet is promiting Phone.com to double its
European headcount of 350 in the next 12 to 18 months, said Bird, who as a
director of computer company Acorn helped spin off microchip designer ARM
Holdings (LSE: ARM.L[19] - news[20]) Plc .
It has 750 employees worldwide and a market capitalisation of $5.35
billion. It supplies Internet gateway systems and other infrastructure to 60
operators.
