Demo Description:
15 million Japanese end users are already used to using their mobile phones to browse content services, supplied by the nation's creative application service developers. This also means that it will be easy for Japanese end users to adopt and enjoy the more advanced mobile internet services, that will become possible with third generation (3G) mobile phone systems.

3G will first be available in 2001, when NTT DoCoMo and J-Phone will be among the first mobile phone operators in the world to introduce such systems. Both operators will use the W-CDMA standard, and Ericsson will provide W-CDMA communication equipment to both of them. 3G data speeds of 384 Kbps-2 Mbps will make it possible for content developers to create many exciting new services. The transition from 2G to 3G will be gradual, with 3G networks gradually being built out, and content developers constantly coming up with new ideas on how to utilize 3G to supply services that are more useful and more entertaining.

Ericsson invites content developers who are already planning their 3G mobile internet services, and developers who are still thinking about it, to attend a "3G mobile internet demo" at the Nippon Ericsson's Research Center in YRP. Participants will first get to visit the lab and see Ericsson's WCDMA system. After that we will show a demo of 3G mobile internet services that are actually transmitted over live WCDMA, to demonstrate the capabilities of 3G (however, the handset will be simulated on a PC). The demo will show eight examples of 3G services and demonstrate how such services can include streaming of music, downloading of music and video clips, and video conferencing. Ericsson hopes that the demo session will be useful for Japanese content developers to visualize 3G and for them to brainstorm about new, creative content services. [Note: The demo will be held in Japanese]
