They need approval from the FCC for any radio that will be used in the US.
In the case of cell phones this usually means getting approval for the
GSM1900 (and now GSM850) parts of the phone. The GSM900 and 1800 parts
don't need approval because they are not for use in the US.

You should see the Sharp V801SH appear in the FCC web site soon because,
even though it might not be sold there, it is intended to be used there in
roaming mode. The approval process is not very long and I suspect it will
show up shortly.
