Hi John
If you check the figures, LG and Samsung have been capturing a lot of
EU market share recently thanks to their clamshell designs.

So expect this form factor getting more and more popular as it has
a good advantage in providing a decent keyboard and display size.

Another aspect you should consider is that screen size will be soon
a decisive feature for choosing a mobile phone. In this way those
"disappearing" handsets of the voice centered generation will have not
much sense for those users looking for advanced features.

Well as most analysis point out the failure of WAP is at the base of the
difference in EU an JP designs. With no content to be "consumed" EU
users were looking only on size, weight and design while JP users
were looking on rich content experience so screen size, polyphonic tones
and cameras.

So the result of the different design approach is matter of errors made
by EU handsets producers and operators and not some obscure user
behavioral difference.

Cheers

Giovanni
