Because standards slow you down. Making and using a standard is
different from working alone in that:

     1. You need to spend time working out agreement between groups
     with slightly differing goals.

     2. You need to spend time doing interoperability testing, and making
     changes to you system based on the results of those tests.

     3. You end up with a system that's not as ideally suited to your
     particular business as a custom one, because it's been designed for
     other people as well.

For any project, the more people you have to communicate with, the
harder things get.
