They are basically direct competitors. However, it's a bit of an odd
sort of competition, since none of the backers' business models are
predicated on using a particular code; the Semacode folks' business
would run just as well on QR code as Semacode, for example.

That depends much more on the reader than on the code itself. I've seen
reading speeds ranging from many seconds to a fraction of a second.
