No, of course, they'd have to start charging something approaching market
rates for the phones. That's a given. I've always found it somewhat insane
that expensive handsets are given away like cornflakes, even with the
locked-down nature of the things.

Couldn't there be some sort of refund scheme if you use the vendor's service
in Japan (tied to usage)? I'm sure there's some sort of model that makes
money for the carriers and satisfies the users to a better extent. Would
demand completely evaporate if open phones were on the market at a
reasonable price? I doubt it.
