Actualy that was the trend in Japan until the advent of mobile interenet.
For voice use virtually the only phones that were selling were under 50grams
and consumer choice was based on compact size and weight.  There has been a
reversal in this trend and now, consumers want larger screens, colour
screens and other gizmos like cameras etc that make the phone more fun.  
The point is the way Japanese phones were evolving your fingers became too
big to operate the dam thing!
