Instead of rendering three images as one, or trying to slap them together
using chtml and non-standard table extensions, a fast and dirty way would
just be to render all the combinations beforehand as images and pick the
right one.... Depends how many you have of course, it could get kinda
gross...

Will GD be safe with php4.06 (first in the 4 stream to have REAL Jp
support)?
