CDMA (900mhz) is mostly used in the US before and now they are acquiring GSM
as well (1800mhz and 1900mhz).
Japan use PHS quite a lot lately, which is a totally different pick.

Following Drew's comment, another issue for US handsets is that many of them
are both analogue and digital. In Europe, 'tri-band' means GSM at 900, 1800
and 1900. In the USA, 'Tri-band' means two digital bands and one analogue.
Putting both into the handset drives up the size and cost substantially,
which means corners have to be cut elsewhere.

Example:

vs

The two phones look identical fron the front - but the US handset is twice
as thick. This probably has an effect of take-up rates as well.
