Gerhard,
True enough, that this number is that of cellular subscribers, but not
particularly true that NTT DoCoMo's overall number is much higher: Their
number of PHS subscribers stands at only 1,906,000 at this point, which
is a mere 5% of their total subscribers.
The other interesting thing that 40 million cellular subscribers means
is that it is quite easy, even for those of us who are mathematically
challenged, to see that with 40 million total subscribers, and 30
million of them i-mode users that makes 75% of NTT DoCoMo's total number
of users i-mode users. Not bad when considering that the average revenue
per user (ARPU) on i-mode services was over 2,000 yen/mo. at last
report. Guess what, European and American readers--this number is nearly
completely derived from packet data charges, with NTT DoCoMo not making
much if any money on content services.
Cheers,
Nik Frengle

Graham: you did not read this announcement carefully!
DoCoMo announced 40 million cellular subscribers - not
40 million subscribers. Since DoCoMo also offers a number
of non-cellular services (e.g. PHS and others) the total
number of DoCoMo subscribers will be quite a bit higher
than 40 million.
