Sony has been in the GSM market for a looong time, some of the models have
even been reasonably popular. Why would they make the big move now when the
market is 10x more difficult, and with struggling Ericsson?

I'd say it's more about consolidation. An ailing handset vendor (Ericsson)
and mid-sized GSM handset vendor (Sony) can join the R&D forces and their
sales figures look better combined, maybe they'll even generate profit. The
recent handset announcements from SonyEricsson are not very promising as one
can easily tell what is Ericsson-made and what is Sony-made..

I would put my bet on Samsung although they definetly need to hire some
European design people to make the phones look better.
