(keitai-l) SMS in US

Does anyone know whether SMS has taken off in the US? I had heard it was 
slowed down by the lack of compatible systems but this problem was supposed 
to have been solved by late 2001. do carriers now use compatible systems 
and has this lead to growth in SMS in the US?
