I noticed that the patent was filed in 1986 so assuming 17 years to a life
of a patent there seems to be 1 to 2 years left on the JPEG patent. However
royalties can be collected for use of patent before it had expired.

Formerly known as VTEL, Forgent Networks acquired Compression Labs in 1997,
acquiring this patent into the bargain. The patent claim was filed in 1986
but Compression Labs never pursued royalties.

Remember the GIF fiasco? Will there be a JPEG one?
