this is a typical DoCoMo fever/syndrome,

J-SH09 (avail end September) and J-SH52 (avail October 11)
can read 2D bar code via camera and all you read in the news
are these Sharp terminals for J-Phone/Vodafone.

the new N504iS (due tomorrow), has a simple OCR to recognize
alphanumerical strings (phone numbers, mail addresses, URL's)
this feature is not that famous. N504iS comes with a higher
power IR to remote control TVs (built in: Panasonic, Sony,
and Sharp) from within 3 meters.

the difference: Sharp phones can read encoded Japanese and
the vcard format (street addresses, business cards, etc.),
while N504iS can read plan text, simple numbers only.

it has less to do with the operators (J-Phone or DoCoMo), but
a feature of terminal makers, and Sharp is the one here.

there're normal bar code readers to be attached to a PDC
handset (don't know cdma ones) for more than a year.

cheers,

Ken
