This is possible with Java apps.  Some phones give you the option to
create an icon on the desktop when you install the app.  Some phones
do it automatically.  Some not at all.  There is no spec for it AFAIK
and it is implementation dependent.

Java is deeply integrated in Symbian and RIM Blackberry and from the
desktop you can't tell if the app is Java or native (except on
blackberry there is no native...)

What's the story with Docomo, KDDI and J-Phone?  It's been a while
since I've had a look.
