I seem to recall that somewhere there is a USB driver for Windows that
allows you to sniff the USB packets as they pass through; if you can dig
this up, it would certainly help to reverse engineer the protocol that
they're using.
I suspect that they may be using a USB serial adapter in the cable, and
the protocol is a serial one; the old phone connectivity cables used to
hook up to a serial port, if I recall correctly.
