EZ Applis in Java using the KJX format are outdated. (You can find a
list of phones with EZ Appli Java support on
http://www.au.kddi.com/ezfactory/tec/spec/ezplus.html.) All recent
KDDI phones, including the W44K you mentioned, support BREW. (You can
find a list of phones with BREW support on
http://www.au.kddi.com/ezfactory/service/brew.html.)

There's news however if you desperately want to develop in Java: a
recent addition to KDDI's developer Web site mentions Open Applis
(http://www.au.kddi.com/ezfactory/tec/spec/openappli.html). Looks like
that's a standard MIDP 2.0 environment using JAD/JAR files. I couldn't
find a list of devices that support Open Applis, but the document
mentions a W51X series in the section about the Java application's
user agent.
