This system is not invented to make business out of it...actually
it's made to avoid big business...hint, hint, hint!

Do you also know that you can detect a mobile phone, even
if it is switched off? This doesn't work (not yet) from very far away,
but as long as a battery powered some simple electronically circuit
(in this case the button to switch on a phone...there is power on it
and if the capacity changed (by pressing the button) a counter starts
and when the counter reached a specified limit, the phone is switched
on and you see (depends on the model) this funny little bear wake up.

From much closer you can also detect a mobile phone WITHOUT
a battery...as long as a coil is inside, you can detect it.
Think of the thief detection systems in every big shop outside
Tokyo. Every coil can be a specific fingerprint of any electronic
device.

There is a great shop in Miami, Florida called SpyShop (the NYC
based branch is not so good) where you can inform yourself about
this technology, it's really amazing what kind of gadgets they
have.

Have fun while getting paranoid :)
