US Cell Service Update According to Econ One, the average monthly cost for cellphone service in the US in February 2001 was $39.04 -- up 0.2% from the previous month. Local charges increased for certain cities in the US: Chicago’s average rose by 3%, Detroit’s by 2.8%, Cincinnati and St. Louis by 2.7% and Houston by 2.5%.
