Hi,

    | There is a Simple Solution to this Question. Everyone
    | would have to support PNG formats.

However, PNG is a lossless format which makes image filesize much
heavier than JPEG. Unfortunately since the patent covers compression
techniques, it perhaps also covers JPEG2000, which is a yet-unpopular
spiffy algorithm (for the curious, here is a good PDF file comparing
JPEG2000 with some other formats:
http://www.jpeg.org/public/wg1n1816.pdf).

Meanwhile, there is a very interesting article in Scientific American
about abusive practices of such patent claims.

As Unisys's greed has amply showed in the past, nothing quite handicaps
the development of software as patents like these. Although this may
give that much needed boost to SVG or Flash as alternative means of
displaying graphics? Macromedia / Adobe do read this list, don't they?
:)
