I can give a generalized, highly opinionated and possibly partially incorrect answer...

It depends on the type of content, and it's not always easy to divide
into the 3 categories you describe. Everyone tries to get as much money as possible.
And its a big mess in most countries. In Japan it tends to be divided up
closer to what work in required, so that those that work the hardest
get their proper share (Japanese group mentality).

While in the US you do get the effect of lawyers making illogical deals causing
it to get insane, so that the amount that is received by each group in total
is greater than the amount that is paid by the consumers. (Very Republican
unfortunately).

In Japan by publishers, I think for ringtones its all handled by JASRAC, so there's
only one company to deal with. (very nice). So forget about publishers there.

Europe (KPN/EPlus/Wind/Bouyges, etc) is approximately halfway between
the Japan and the US model.

Of course I know very little being a programmer and not caring about
such things... I hope someone else can more accurate info.

(But I like to do silly posts now and then when I feel like it)
