DoCoMo Recalls 100,000 Defective Cell Phones

TOKYO (Nikkei)--NTT DoCoMo Inc. (9437), the nation's largest cellular
carrier, has launched a recall of four handset models that contain software
glitches, The Nihon Keizai Shimbun learned Friday.

The recall will cover about 103,000 phones sold by NTT DoCoMo and
manufactured by Sony Corp. (6758), Japan Radio Co. (6751), Hitachi Kokusai
Electric Inc. (6756) and the Swedish telecommunications equipment maker
Telefon AB LM Ericsson. All four models are compatible with NTT DoCoMo's
i-mode Internet connection service.

NTT DoCoMo is ready to exchange the defective phones free of charge with new
handsets that have the software problems corrected.

The recall will affect Sony's SO502iWM, a model released in December that
can replay music stored in a memory card as well as function as a normal
cellular phone. The problem is a software bug that can cause the phone's
power to be cut off when a consumer uses a remote control function to halt
music in order to take a call.

The other three models have glitches that display the wrong date on e-mail
messages received over the phone.
