Sony slips their activities :
Mobile = SonyEricsson
Movies = Sony Pictures Entertainment
Music = Sony Music Entertainement
Consumer Products = Sony...

Take a look at http://www.sonyericsson.com/cebit/ to have GSM to GPRS
phone from SonyEricsson in EUROPE.
And mobile phone for Japan on http://www.sonyericsson.co.jp/product/index.html

SonyEricsson has also closed this month an agreement with Sun
Microsystems to implement on all its mobile the J2ME (Java 2 mobile
Edition) engine. Also Sony HQ uses all its Media synergies topush
Entertainement services on mobile phone (playstation licenced games
will be also on mobile / Music Donwloading services...).

Its one of the reason why Nokia, Siemens, Samsung & Motorola are
developing a great partnership programs with Content Agregator &
Developers. Product is not enough; Content is a value added services for selling
mobile phone to Mobile Operator and so, to end users (consumers). An
operator will be interested for any kind of Turn Key solutions from
Mobile manufacturer that will give help their Marketing department to
improve Consumer products & services.
However ALCATEL, PHILIPS, SAGEM are just implementing a prioritary
engines on their phone and depends of technology that will be
dissolved... it's how i see them on my last visit on 3GSM
WorldCongress in Cannes/France !

Just for information :
We can take example from the Video Games industry. A game console could be
technically the most advanced on the market, but if there's no content (video
games library), the console will die...
Remember at the beginning of 1990's, there was 3 handheld consoles in
Europe : GAMEGEAR (sega) / LYNX (atari) / GAMEBOY (Nintendo).
So GAMEGEAR & LYNX was in Color, really nice color graphics,
GAMEBOY was in Grey color with boring small screen. At the end
NINTENDO gained, WHY ?
- Batteries issues : GAMEGEAR & LYNX having 2 hours of supply. GAMEBOY :
22 hours of game play !

- Price issues : GAMEGEAR & LYNX were at least for 150 €uros. GAMEBOY
was at 75 €uros. Also Games was cheaper on GameBoy than GameGear or
Lynx.

- Technical issues : Code a game on GAMEGEAR & LYNX requires more time
than GameBoy due of Color issues, lake of Manufacturer marketing
support...

- Video Games products range : GAMEGEAR & LYNX games were really poor
in term of "GamePlay" (gamePlay : a good game is one that you can win by doing the
unexpected and making it work). GAMEBOY has used NINTENDO sucessfull
marketing branded product (mario, kirby, zelda...) to attract & retain
their customers. Moreover, Nintendo benefits of an unexpected developer
community that is also currently active in 2002 and is moving to GameBoy Advance
too...

We can conclude that :
GameBoy was really technicaly weak against its competitors
but the handheld console was cheaper, having long baterries life,
qualify (gameplay) & a quantity of content (video games).
Maybe European Mobile operator and manufacturer should take also this
example in mind to guarantee the success of their offer to consumers.
