I've found having a fairly major tantrum in anything but Japanese to be far
more effective ;)

In Osaka, DoCoMo has never asked me for my phone on any on the numerous
times I've upgraded or closed an account.

Doesn't DoCoMo want the phones back to ensure the safe disposal of the
battery? I'm sure there was some legislation floating around requiring safe
disposal by manufacturers.
