SMS, usually to a shortcode, that is billed at a higher rate than normal
rates. In most cases at a band of rates up to about 5 euro. The revenue is
shared between a content provider and the mobile operator. Usually starts at
50-50 share for 50 cent message charge with provider share increasing above
50% as the charge increases.

other issues for content providers to bear in mind:
- hidden charges - operators often impose a monthly threshold and handling
fee. Threshold can be high and restarts at each month.
- interoperability - as usual shortcodes may not transfer across networks

Wonderful thread. Diverse, thoughtful, on point.

Quick question: what specifically is premium-rate SMS as distinct from
plain ole SMS?

Cheers,
