I am astonished by this attitude, and others that have been expressed 
in the thread.

It isn't "either / or" - this is an ADDITIONAL capability that is being 
brought to a keitai that allows it to access an even wider range of 
information.

Why - exactly - should this not be welcomed with open arms? Part of the 
success of imode came precisely from its ability to read any old 
cobbled together bit of simple html. That hasn't stopped new uses 
emerging.

" It must be special! - it must be different! - It must not be able to 
read anything that has gone before!"

Is this the cry of developers now?

 From the user's perspective, this is bizzare.
