Curt,

Your naive analysis seems right on. 
Using a GPU instead of a pumped up CPU actually increases
battery life, since bus data traffic decreases
significantly. Also, specialized GPUs are incredibly good
at what they do (mainly because raster operations are
easily parallelized), making the "FPS per watt" a
magnitude higher.
This is assuming of course, that the system is well
designed. Using the shoehorn approach (which sadly,
happens) will result in having to send the resulting 3D
image back to the CPU memory, and other nightmarish things
like that.
