It's pushed to the handset, and you receive an immediate alert (assuming
you're connected to the network at the time the mail is received).

It looks like a modem to a Linux system, and you run PPP over it. No
special drivers are required.
I used to use both a DDI PHS and bMobile PHS PCMCIA card on my NetBSD
laptop all the time.
