I am also a big fan of P504i and as you were mentioning the F209, 
launched in June 2000,
I could not resist mentioning Sanyo's C405SA (launched in Jan 2001, 
almost 4 years ago)

thickness : 9.9mm (!)

As they say in those commercials "ichi mili"...
Ok, it's black & white, no camera, no Java, but it can fit in any pocket...
Sadly, all those models are not offered anymore... (maybe in recycle 
shops ?)

It is also interesting to see that in Japan there is almost no "entry" 
or "low-end" model
as well as handsets for "business users". All handsets are basically 
mass-market
and trade on very high volumes (handsets sales for FY2004 was about 50 
millions units...)
