relatively small group of subscribers (about 30%) who actually use the
i-mode service and drive the packet charges of 2000 Yen a month. With
respect to the dates on the D2 data, I have data from them for may and
september (hard copy) from D2C and the age and gender distribution did not
change much between those dates. so victor's assumption is most likley valid
concerning the age and gender data.
the AsiaBizNews article that he refers to is also interesting, in particular
its comments about mobile commerce. It mentions a number of firms that are
involved with mobile commerce but only one firm in the travel sector (HIS).
the japanese government released data (article shown below) estimating there
will be 19 billion yen in mobile commerce sales in fiscal 2000 (versus 40
billion yen in contents). of the mobile commerce numbers, 2.5 billion yen
was for CDs and books and 5 billion yen was for travel. are that many people
actually buying airline tickets and package tours from HIS on their mobile
phones? Or is it those love hotels that are driving mobile commerce in
Japan?
