DoCoMo has been attracting record numbers almost every month since they have
been offering i-mode so I don't think DoCoMo is making a valid assertion
that Java is the cause of recent growth.

Looks like the java mobile is attracting customers?

DoCoMo attracts record number of mobile users in March
Japanese cellular giant NTTDoCoMo has announced a record monthly rise in
customers during March; its total customer base rose by 911,000 to reach
36.03 million at the end of the month. The company also signed 1.98 million
new subscribers to its mobile internet access service, i-mode, to reach a
total of 21.75 million. The company attributes the large rise to the better
availability of Java-enabled handsets, with buyers of the new handsets
accounting for 30% of its new subscribers.
