I have an i-mode phone and didn't receive any such notification. My
girlfriend has a J-Phone and we were both very surprised when she
received the messages. I thought the first one was some kind of spam.
When the second one arrived the whole thing sounded much more serious so
we checked it out on the news.......

Such notification services are nothing new but she doesn't remember
registering for this service. I like the idea of being notified like
this in the case of an emergency. However, the criteria for what is an
emergency situation seems a bit off the mark. Of course the disaster in
New York is terrible but I wouldn't really call it an emergency for
people living in Japan. Yet a couple of days ago we had a direct hit
from a typhoon that took some lives and there was no warning given about
that via J-Phone's (emergency?) notification service.
