Thanks so much for all your responses to my original question. 

I had just finished implementing a first pass of the phone-number
detection when Nick's note came through.  

So, before I begin my next pass, I would be interested in hearing how
others feel about this.  On the one hand, I understand Nick and Jani's
perspective.  I can imagine clicking on a hyperlink and being unpleasantly
surprised as my phone starts dialing.  On the other hand, if I actually
wanted to dial a number on the page, this feature would be quite 
convenient. 

Would adding emoji to the anchor text clarify the purpose of the 
link?  Perhaps a picture of a phone (&#63721; or &#63858;)?  

Within Google we think the auto-detect is a cool feature, but if
actual users don't, please speak up!
