The better pre-paid systems (certainly Logica`s Aethos product) have
interface for packet billing. So, just as it does for a voice call, the
pre-paid system will continually deplete your balance as you send/receive
packets, and when your pre-paid balance reaches zero, it will prevent
further calls/packet transfers, until the account is re-charged. The key
thing is that the operator has your money in advance, outside Japan
operators have been increasing services available beyond voice for pre-paid
subs, and the pre-paid system vendors will happily sell an upgrade enabling
pre-paid packet. More info at
