Having toiled - twice - in the bowels of the telecom
network management software industry - a gruesome,
corpse-laden thicket of quasi-proprietary protocols
and platforms - it's nice to see Nokia moving to open
source, starting that 'delamination' of what's been
a relatively vertical market, and all the vendor lock-in
that entails.

In the same issue of The Register: Microsoft falling
down on the handheld platform-definition job.

Maybe because, as a former Apple employee said of that
company, Microsoft "...has only one spotlight" -- and
coincidentally, I hear Bill Gates behind me on Japanese
TV nasally explaining how XBox is going to "introduce"
people to interactive networked gaming, like that hasn't
been going on for mule's years already. (But he's talking
in Shibuya, so he might get a clue while going to and from
the limo.)
