In theory, platformRequest could be used for this purpose and Sprint
does support a richer set of URIs -- but elsewhere only http: (and
tel:) are supported.
The content handler API is intended to enable this in a standard way:

Looks like Nokia is behind this, at least their latest Prototype SDK
supports it.
